A group of airlines have increased the number of miles required for an award ticket. In addition, some airlines now award miles according to the price of the ticket instead of by miles traveled, and they differentiate between a domestic (U.S.) trip versus an alliance partner’s trip. Plus, in many cases it’s difficult to redeem miles for trips to popular destinations during peak travel times. All this is despite an average increase of seat occupancy to up to 82 percent, which makes even themiddle seat appealing.
