40 The Passport Control Mess at Most European Airports In July 2026, a VideoAge representative wrote a letter to the powers that be at Milan’s Malpensa Airport to complain about the long lines at the border-control booths for nonSchengen (border-free zone) countries. A Malpensa official responded by blaming the lines on the airport’s reduced number of border-control personnel. However, an article in the August 13, 2026 edition of The Wall Street Journal pinned the responsibility on a new E.U. electronic Entry/Exit System. (The VideoAge letter and the airport’s reply were published in the July 8, 2026 edition of Montreal’s weekly Cittadino Canadese.) The new system, introduced in April 2026, relies on facial recognition and passport scanning. Computer glitches, combined with the aforementioned staff shortages, have contributed to the long and chaotic lines at entry and exit booths at E.U. airports. The lines have become so long that airlines have asked the E.U. Commission to ease up on the new controls.
