26 AA Gives Extra Time To Board Airplanes The question of whether it takes more time to board a plane or to disembark from it is still unresolved, but American Airlines is doing its damnedest to make the boarding process less fraught for its nine boarding groups by allowing passengers to get onto domestic flights five minutes earlier. That means that American’s narrow-body planes will now begin boarding 35 minutes before departure, while larger narrow-body and wide-body aircrafts will continue to start the boarding process 40 minutes before departure. The hope is that the extra time will reduce the number of gatechecked carry-on bags and that flight attendants will have more time to find space for bags. It is as yet unclear whether American will discontinue the process of pre-boarding passengers that require more time to enter or exit the plane, which is widely abused and creates delays. L.A.
